Their Webguide
has a section on Art & Culture which leads to a larger list
Art & Design (?).
Then also their Webguide's section Education
leeds to
Education Categories which then allows you to chose Art where you
can chose your level. Chose Adult Art (?) and presto you get
another well edited list of art sites.
(The BBC obviously favors education so the lists for schools are
very goo, too.)
These two lists overlap occasionally, as far as I can tell.
(I'm happy to note that even the BBC doesn't attempt to categorize sites, which I've given up any hope of doing ages ago. But then again, they are not quirky and their links don't go stale as easily as on this list.)
The Outsider Pages & Roadside Art Online
Articles and presentations of artists.
This site includes the truly "Comprehensive web guide to folk and
outsider art online"
If you really enjoy this kind of art, you can go to one of the electronic auction sites. ebay has the section Antiques:Folk Art and a gallery option that allows you to view the vast number of items on sale. Old Saw with Hand Painted Texas Farm Scene, anyone? Check out the Collectibles:Art section, too.
A site that can afford to deal with problems the way most computer people would love to can't be bad.
"From Russia with Art." "Our databank contains over 700 Russian artists including 6000 images." An extensive site.
I just added a Russian site above so now I must include something from Finland's neighbour in the west. ArtNet.se links to lots of Swedish galleries and other art sites. From here you can go to the site Stockholm - Cultural Capital of Europe 1998. (And while your at it, Finland's Helsinki is one of the nine European Cultural Capitals in the year 2000.)
Someone asked me by mail for links to Latin American Art. This museum has a good Latin Art link list in addition to its own collection.
And now for something completely different...
"The World 1000 lists thousands of sites in
36 categories and ranks them based on the
amount of traffic they receive... "
If you're just surfing and have time, see the sites where the claimed
average of 4,237,737 visitors per day go.
Try the Arts section for inspiration, perhaps. Be warned, it does
link things like Italian Cast Lovers (?!) among "art".
This looks like a very good site for the Forbes type of
Art news?
(I do hope that tiny light grey text on a white
background is NOT the lastest web-designer trend.)
This site commemorates Alvar Aalto, architect and designer.
This site links to architecture, painting, photography, and culpture images all over the web. If you are lucky and the artist you're looking for is listed, then you will find this a very good source. The sites the image links lead to are themselves often worth a good browse.

"This completely free service offers easy access to hundreds of thousands of member websites, organised by related interests into easy to travel rings."
This ring idea is very powerful.
Go see the vast Arts and Humanities, Artist or Design rings.
You'll find the
Artists of the Web Ring, among others.
(Perhaps those of you who are tired of my slowness in adding your
site onto this list, will find a more timely service here.)
If you go through the WebRing Directory, you will also
be able to see lists of the most popular sites accessed through the
ring system. For Arts and Humanities | Arts they are mostly
sites for pictures of naked women. Who would have guessed?
But what is this?,
Ring of Fire - Burning Man???? Go see to believe.
And
Poser?
Leads to the Poser4 "The Premier 3D and character animation tool" by
MetaCreations
whose company page has a Community section with
art examples.
I do know an art student at our university who had to move
over to computer art becauce of a serious allergy. Perhaps this
is an option for others, too.
Yes, this web ring thing is really intersting.
I found a ring for ex libris (bookplates), which led to the site The Art of the Ex Libris among others. I chose this one because of its excellent links to other sites. It links to Heraldry, too.
Of course, there is a seperate Heraldy and Coats of Arms Webring. I linked you to the list of this rings sites. You find the one you like.

The related pages list here is interesting for fantasy,

The truly extensive

hard to find.
Go!
If this is your thing, then this is your site.
Slawek's Guide to Science-Fiction, Fantasy, Space & Surreal Art is good, too.
(Anomalous Images and UFO files is one of the sites for the real stuff with good links to others. Alien art is still very rare even on the Web. Examples of alien design are a bit more common but are mostly pictures of transport devices. The quality of the images is often less than optimal and the sites showing them are often not reachable for some reason or other.)
This site was found among the links on the excellent SDSU Education First pages.
