The joint and compulsory MA studies in the School of Design (8 cr) In all the courses except Lopputyöseminaari I, which is going to be organized both in English and in Finnish, teaching language is English! 06021 Introduction to joint master studies 2 cr Objectives: To speed
up and bring closer the MA studies of different degree programmes and
to bring together the new MA students of the School of Design. To develop
the students' readiness for team work, for conceptual and analytic thinking
and for seeing and understanding different ways of thinking. The joint
studies aim to help the students to see design in a wider context and
to identify the quick changes occuring in studies and professional practices.
The course forms a basis for the joint projects which will start immediately
after this course. 06022 Joint project 2 cr Objectives: To support
analytic and conceptual thinking, to develop design concept methods
as well as process oriented working approach, and teamwork and communication
skills 06023 Theoretical and Conceptual Seminar I: "4 E design workshop" 1 ov Objectives: to deepen
sustainable aspects in design process. 06007 Lopputyöseminaari I 1 ov (suomenkielinen) Tavoite: Seminaarin
tavoitteena on saada osallistujat hahmottamaan lopputyön aiheita,
tavoitteita ja suoritusta. Opintojakso kehittää lopputyön
tekemisessä tarvittavia käytännön taitoja, tietoja
ja vaatimuksia. 06007 Thesis Seminar I 1 cr (in English) Objectives: Thesis seminar I aims to give the students an overview of the possible topics, objectives and process of final thesis work. This seminar will provide the students with practical information and knowledge needed in the thesis process. Content: The topics dealt in seminar include: choosing your topic; setting a hypothesis; the structure and planning of a thesis work; thesis as a process; scheduling your work; information gathering and critics; documentation and report; visual image of the thesis; presentation skills; copyright; thesis guidelines of the University and the study programmes. Assessment: pass / fail 06024 Theoretical and Conceptual Seminar II: Theoretical Terms of Reference 1 cr Objectives: To introduce the essential theoretical and conceptual possibilities and sources to support the thesis project. Content: Professors and teachers of the School of Design and visiting experts will lecture on theoretical frame and concepts used in design and on concept formation. The seminar covers the essential tradition of the main disciplines and describes how they have been utilized in design and in design research. In addition to art history, these disciplines include social sciences, ergonomics and technological sciences. Assessment: pass / fail 08039 Thesis Seminar II 1 cr Objectives: The aim of this seminar is to support the students in the process which will result in a Master's Thesis and graduation, by providing students with working tools, tutoring and supporting the development process with critical analysis and discussions of each project. Content: In the seminar students present their thesis plan, and the seminar will discuss and analyze each plan. Academic writing skills practiced in a special workshop. Each student will also follow a report on min. two thesis presentations at the School of Design. Assessment: pass
