How School of Design Uses Money for the Process

The School of Design budgets 4000€ for every doctoral process that go into examination.

These monies are meant to take you through the process. It does not allow luxury. So, if your thesis has 450 pages (which it should NEVER be: this is a sign of missing supervision), make sure you use cheap paper and forget images in color. Also, if you have to have an Australian examiner, make sure you save money from other parts of the process.

Note that most expenses are fixed:
1. Pre-examiners' and examiners' fees are paid from this sum. Typically, they take about 1400€
2. Examiners' travel expenses and accommodation takes money. If they are from Helsinki, this is 10€; other Finland, perhaps 200€; Northern Europe 400€; other parts of the world, easily 1000-1400€
3. Examination day expenses (flowers, coffee, champagne, prints etc.) 200-300€
4. UIAH official photograph 300€ (this is not necessary, and is usually paid for by departments, not the SoD)
5. Graphic design by students of graphic design 200-400€
6. Printing the book takes the rest, usually 1000-2000€

You have to pay everything else from your own pocket. Note in particular that language revision is NOT paid for by the SoD: make sure you reserve money for it well before your book goes into the printing phase. It is relatively easy to get funds for language revision from foundations, so make sure you apply for these funds in due time, preferably already when your supervisor begins to show green light for your thesis.
