STEP 1: PRE-PRODUCTION (23 Oct - 5 Nov)
Some stuff for inspiration
- DPPI 4 min, 18MB by Hannah Regier and Jenny Liang. I think this was pretty good. I asked Hannah to go for feeling, not content. Her film follows the structure of the conference, goes from backstage to front, from disorder (iron, trash) to evening parties, from expectations to action, and has a lot of humor (like Petra's expression when Salu helps her, and Kees Overbeeke's reaction to being filmed, not to mention Lucas-our-mascot)
- LA Times, street scenes, see esp. Temple City (narrator is an old barber), East LA (B&W, oddly nostalgic), and Venice Beach (no narrator)
- open any news channel and analyze TV news and reportage: these guys are really skilled in bringing you to context, in creating the story, and telling about hugely complex things in less than a minute
- music helps to create feeling: think about it, but we need to make sure we got rights to use it & time to make sure we have these rights. unless it is prohibitevely expensive, we can probably use a bit music on our Web site. However, keep in mind that music does not tell: it communicates feelings. Check this one from Los Angeles, which I did it about 2 yrs ago. It goes in themes - in this order: streetscapes, architecture, deserts, ethnic LA, political art and artists, carnevals, downtown at night - but it's Ellington who gives the tone. - This one from New York (23MB) has a very different tone (listen about 2 min before it gets boring); the point here is a jazz band I happened listen to in Hell's Kitchen one night. However, timing things to 1/100 sec takes a lot of effort, and requires creating a "micro-library" you will notice when listening to this exercise.
