Pictures from ICCA 2006
A few pictures from the International Conference for Conversation Analysis, which was arranged at the University of Helsinki in May 10-14, 2006.
Days 1-2:
Having a beer on the first day of the conference before going to the City of Helsinki reception. The place is a restaurant named Kappeli (Chapel) next to the University.
Vice Mayor of the City of Helsinki talks in reception in Town Hall.
Christian Heath from King's College, London talking about auctions. A great talk, and fun!
Congregating at the end of Day 2. This is the main entrance of the U of Helsinki.
Day 3:
Ilkka Arminen from University of Tampere talking about mobile phones.
Pause at UniCafe in the middle of the Main Building of the University.
Dinner at the end of Day 2 in a classic joint called "Sea Horse". Locals call it
"Sikala," which translates "Pig house." Guests from France and Italy were worried about guys in the next table, who looked like Hell's
Angels. Women were worried about this table for another reason: it had only men. I told that my guess was that they are either advertising people or new media
designers, and guys who smoke cigars, eat, drink whisky, and talk quietly are not dangerous in an expensive neighborhood.
Finns and Swedes thought that everything is as normal. I guess ethnomhetodologicall speaking
the only proper reference to end this rather pointless explication is Bittner on police work (1966, 1967).
Days 3-4:
Paul Drew (U of York) talks at conference dinner.
David Frohlich (U of Surrey) and Julie Denoüel (U Paul Valery a Montpellier) talking.
A view over the southwestern part of the city center from Hotel Torni, where I went with David Frohlich.
