Unintentional comedy arising from the efforts of a man and woman engaged in felling a tree. The city-folk tackle the problem with a lack of inhibition and with curiosity. Conventional gender roles are put to the test. At the heart of the piece is the home-spun dialogue between the man and woman, revealing the way they understand each other in spite of the elliptical nature of the way they communicate.
The comedy is highlighted by the fact that the hum-drum language is seen in the form of text over the picture in both the Finnish and the English language versions.
Quick jumps in cutting together with the immobility of the picture format emphasise the documentary feel of the piece. It is the simple and formalised sound expression used for the couple’s speech and the motor-saw that brings out the authenticity of their activity.

Fin is only a Fin if he has bought his own summer cottage, surrounded by high pine trees and situated on one of the thousand lakes the country owns. But trees sometimes spoil the view and keep the sun form coming in. "Cut it!" is then the advice. In A bit scary really by Maarit Suomi-Väänänen two Fins, a man and a woman, try it vigorously. The camera is at a safe distance, and runs to the porch of the house when it gets dangerous. In the establishing shot we see the tree, in the background the frozen and snowy lake.
The man and the woman are silhouettes, moving around the object that has to be removed, discussing heatedly the direction in which the tree is likely to fall down. "Funny" shouldn't be the right word to describe a ritual that takes place on a daily basis in numerous towns (places) in Finland. In that perspective A bit scary really is rather informative. Still Maarit Suomi-Väänänen makes a hilarious show of this 7 minute film, because of the camera position and bizarre dialogue that develops between the couple.
The funniest is the end shot, when the tree has finally fallen down. The lake is still hidden behind the trees that remain. Nevertheless the woman thinks that something has changed: "The scenery is totally different. And we do have more sun now."

It was shown as part of the ParaDocs programme of experimental documentaries and documentary experiments. A Bit Scary Really... was also given a special screening prior to a feature film.
Tahaton komiikka siivittää miehen ja naisen puunkaato puuhaa. Kaupunkilaiset tarttuvat askareeseen ennakkoluulottomasti ja uteliaasti. Miehen ja naisen sovinnaiset roolit joutuvat koetukselle. Teoksen suola on miehen ja naisen välinen kotikutoinen dialogi, joka paljastaa toisensa hyvin tuntevien kommunikoinnin elliptisyyden; silti ymmärrys vallitsee. Dialogin koomisuus tiivistyy, kun puhekielinen puhunta nähdään tekstinä kuvassa, sekä suomen- että englanninkielisessä versiossa.
Hyppyleikkaukset ja kuvakoon muuttumattomuus korostavat doku-mentaarista ilmaisua. Lähinnä dialogista ja moottorisahauksesta koostuva pelkistetty ääni-ilmaisu tukee autenttista toimintaa.

Suomalaista voi pitää suomalaisena vasta, kun hän on hankkinut kesämökin korkeina huojuvien havupuiden keskeltä, ja tietysti vesistön tuntumasta, tuhansien järvien maassa kun ollaan. Joskus puut kuitenkin peittävät rantanäkymää ja pimentävät tontin. "Poikki vaan!" silloin todetaan. Maarit Suomi-Väänäsen elokuvassa vähän niinku pelottavaa... kaksi suomalaista, mies ja nainen, ryhtyvät tosissaan toimeen. Kamera on turvallisen matkan päässä ja vetäytyy vikkelästi mökin kuistille, kun tilanne alkaa näyttää vaaralliselta.
Aloituskuvaa hallitsee mahtava kuusi, jonka taustalla hohtaa lumen peittämä järvenselkä. Tummina hahmoina näkyvät mies ja nainen hyörivät kohteensa ympärillä ja yrittävät järkeillä, mihin suuntaan se lähtee kaatumaan. Tapahtumaa ei sinänsä voi pitää erityisenä hupinumerona, sillä tällaiset rituaalit kuuluvat suomalaiseen elämään. "vähän niinku pelottavaa..." toimii siis myös dokumenttina arkisesta askareesta. Konstailematon kamerakulma ja pariskunnan pölhö vuoropuhelu kuitenkin virittävät Maarit Suomi-Väänäsen seitsemän minuutin tallenteeseen kutkuttavuutta.
Humoristisin hetki koetaan, kun puu on lopulta kellistetty tantereeseen. Järvenselkää on saatu näkyviin vain kapean kaistaleen verran. Naisen mielestä jotain on kuitenkin muuttunut: "Tää on siis todella siis hämmentävän erilainen. Siis todella niinku ihan oikeesti tää on niinku ihan siis eri maisema."

Elokuva kutsuttiin maineikkaaseen IDFA:aan, Amsterdamin dokumenttielokuvafestivaaleille, jossa sitä esitettiin peräti viisi kertaa. Elokuva oli mukana ParaDocs sarjassa, jossa esitettiin kokeellisia dokumentteja ja dokumentaarisia kokeiluja. Lisäksi "vähän niinku pelottavaa..." dokumentilla oli kunnia tulla valituksia myös pitkän elokuvan alkupalaksi.
