Dr. Teemu Leinonen (b. 1969) holds over a decade of experience in the field of research, design and development of web-based collaboration and learning. His areas of interest and expertise covers design for learning, computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL), online cooperation, learning software design, educational planning and educational politics. Currently Teemu Leinonen is a professor of New Media Design and Learning at the Media Lab of the Aalto University School of Art and Design in Helsinki Finland.

In 1997-1998 Teemu worked as a researcher in the Digital Media Institute at the Tampere University of Technology (http://www.tut.fi/) designing learning environment for secondary education. Since 1998 Teemu has led the Learning Environments research group (http://legroup.uiah.fi) of the Media Lab (http://mlab.taik.fi), Aalto University School of Art and Design Helsinki (http://taik.aalto.fii). The research group has coordinated research and development project, funded by The European Commission in the Information Society Technologies (IST) framework, UNESCO, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the National Technology Agency of Finland (TEKES). In 2008-2009 Teemu was the acting head of department of the the Media Lab (http://mlab.taik.fi).

Teemu's and his research group's approach to research and design of New Media and learning is theory-based but design-oriented. This means that besides the academic research papers the outcomes of the group are often software systems, software prototypes, applications and scenarios. The research group is internationally recognized from its open source virtual learning environment for knowledge building, called Fle3 (http://fle3.uiah.fi) and, a web community and platform for finding, authoring and sharing open and free learning resources, called LeMill (http://.lemill.net). The MobilED initiative (http://mobiled.uiah.fi), generated and coordinate by the research group, is designing learning environments that are meaningfully enhanced with mobile technologies and services. In the project the research group has designed and developed MobilED platform to have Audio Wiki.

Teemu conducts research, design, and publishes in different forums. He has delivered a number of talks and presentation in national and international conferences, has given in-service courses for teachers and carried out consulting and concept design for several ICT and media companies. Within the Media Lab's MA program in Helsinki he is responsible for the 'Brief History of New Media' course and 'New Media and Learning' workshop, as well as supervision and evaluation of final thesis.

Teemu is a founding member and the first president of Vope Ry - the Finnish association of Libre and Open Source in Education, founding partner of Ionoff Ltd and Co-Learnit Ltd, member of the WikiMedia Foundation's (http://wikimediafoundation.org/) Advisory Board, a program committee member of several international conferences and has served as an elected member of the University Senate of the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

Teemu has studied Educational Science at the University of Tampere and New Media design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. His Master thesis studies were about educational ideologies of the World Bank and the Governments of Zambia (University of Tampere) and computer environments for creative team work (University of Art and Design Helsinki). Teemu's doctoral dissertation research (Aalto University School of Art and Design) examined design of software learning tools in the era of the Web, social software and open content. As part of the work he developed four new online learning tools to web and mobile environments. With his family Teemu has lived in Tanzania, Afghanistan and Kenya. At least once a year he visits his family in Colombia.
